Choose the Best Candidate

Choose Best Candidate 2020

Who is going to be the next Vice President in America?

Let us choose the best Vice Presidential candidate possible!

Each time we limit ourselves to “the best woman” or “the best person of color” or even “the best woman of color” it diminishes the key attributes, skills, and qualities of this individual. It limits the opportunities which this person is able to harness.

It demonstrates we are going after something or someone that fits the “bill” or the “mold” that might be “political” rather than the best candidate.. Let us move beyond political games and strategies and do what is best for the country.

America is in dire straits, some might say. We must choose the best person possible for some of the most important spots.

How have some people from different backgrounds done around the world?

New Zealand

In New Zealand, they were one of the first countries to ‘eradicate’ COVID-19 under the leadership of their woman Premier, Jacinda Ardern. Her government imposed strict lockdown measures early on and maintained consistent messaging that instilled confidence and trust among New Zealanders. Now, they can reap the rewards of being the first country to eliminate the virus completely and focus on recovering their economy that is now fully opened.

In Australia, they were also one of the leaders in the battle against the invisible disease thanks to their Prime Minister, Scott Morrison. The Prime Minister organized a coordinated response between the states and territories and the national government, known as the National Cabinet. This ensured that the multilateral public health and economic response was united and effective in its goal of mitigating the economic fallout of the virus while containing the  spread.

As well, Finland took swift action against the virus under the leadership of Prime Minister Sanna Marin. She imposed a lockdown and travel restrictions early on that allowed a responsible reopening starting in early May.

Who might the next Vice President in America be? Who can help our country go down a better path? Who have been some of the best Vice Presidents throughout history?

  1. Lyndon Johnson: he was able to unite the south and be a stalwart for President Kennedy. His diplomatic style helped to combine the disparate groups and unite into a stronger Democratic party. He was so talented that he eventually became the President, sadly because of the assassination of President Kennedy. He wasn’t perfect -- as he increased the troops in Vietnam that eventually led to his downfall.
  2. Al Gore: the typical Veep acts as a ‘balancing’ element to the Presidential nominee. In this case, Mr. Gore was able to function as a mirror to Bill Clinton’s run for president. In his time in office, Gore was a champion of innovative environmental efforts.
  3. Harry S. Truman: in under 90 days, this VEEP was thrust into the spotlight as the next President after FDR’s death. Similar to how America will hopefully overcome the existing battle with coronavirus, Truman helped to overcome WW2.

Whoever the next VEEP will be, let us continue to emphasize the importance of this role, as well as the strategic electoral value a quality candidate holds.

Joe Biden’s list of potential picks is full of leaders who have bucked those in power to help all Americans. Among her many achievements, Elizabeth Warren fought to protect consumers in the financial sector with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Stacey Abrams has been a stalwart fighter in the struggle for access to voting - a battle which plagues many Americans to this day.

Whoever the Vice Presidential candidate will be, let us continue to emphasize the importance of this role, as well as the strategic electoral value a quality candidate holds. As Lyndon B. Johnson has shown us, Biden’s pick could empower the next generation of leaders and show America that his administration is committed to progress.
